Equipment Review and Discussion :: Energy efficient bulbs?

Various accessories and equipment discussed here.

Is it just me or do these give off MUCH less heat than a regular, old-fashioned 60-75w?

I only had the new energy efficient bulbs on hand & replaced the burnt out 75w w/ a 100w ee bulb, checking the temps frequently. Never got warmer than 85 in the 'hot spot' (was 88-100 w/ the old 75).
Huh? I ran to the store & replaced w/ another 75 and it's working great again.

Are you talking about your basking light and the newer compact fluorescent "energy" light bulbs? They are intended to not give off much heat, which makes them more energy efficient. Old incandescent light bulbs, that's why they take so much extra energy, because they lose so much heat. I fear, though, that eventually the old incandescent bulbs are going to disappear and any reptile owners will be forced to buy specialty bulbs from the pet stores.

That's exactly what I was thinking. :( Ugh. I'm liking the outdoor pond more & more everyday - sunshine NOT sold seperately! lol

I like the energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs...I use them with a separate heat bulb (ceramic heat emitter).

With that combo and a thermostat, I can have the UVB bulb at the recommended distance - as not to harm my turtles eyes, and the thermostat makes sure the basking area is always a warm 90 degrees - no matter what my room temp is, which can vary from 65-100 throughout the year. No fussing with the heat lamp's height to get the temp right!!

I buy the specialty bulbs from the pet store for two reasons 1. they are purple and are not so bright on the eyes and 2. they last a heck of a lot longer than the household bulbs. My 60 watt JUST burnt out after 10 months wheras the household bulbs burn out every month.

Does any one use a heat emitter? My electric bill was enormous this month, and the only thing that I have new is two heat emitters in my tortoise tank. I live in NY, but am not a "heat person". I like it cool, so really don't raise my heat too much. I keep it on 66 - 68. It usually runs $250 for Jan, but now it was 360. I am thinking the heat emitters. Anyone know about this?
