General Care Discussion :: Can I keep a red ear slider with these turtles species?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Thu Sep 10, 2015 10:17 pm   Can I keep a red ear slider with these turtles species?

Can I keep a red ear slider with a western painted turtle, african side necked turtle/pelusios castaneus, murray river turtle/emydura macquarii, and gibba toad head turtle/phrynops gibbus. Can I keep all the turtles I listed in a 1000 gallon plus aquarium with very powerful custom filtration? I just want to know this because in the future I plan on getting a very large aquarium like a 1000 gallons plus so I can keep multiple turtles but for now I will start out small and eventually move my way up to getting more turtles and a bigger aquarium.

Will This Pond Be Indoors? Honestly, male RES can be very aggressive, so you need to prioritize that.

Western Painted Turtle - YES
African Side Necked Turtle - MAYBE NO... It's Possible But Could Be Difficult.
Murray River Turtle - MAYBE YES... Similar requirements as RES but might be bullied
Gibba Toad Head Turtle - NO... They can be an aggressive species.

If instead of a very large aquarium and I go with a pond than yes the pond will be indoors but instead of a gibba toad head turtle would a northern australian snake necked turtle/chelodina siebenrocki work out well as a replacement for the gibba turtle? Also would the argentine snake necked turtle/hydromedusa tectifera be a good candidate to go with the red ear slider and other turtles? Would these species of snake necked turtles work as replacements for the gibba toad head turtle to go with a red ear slider, african side necked turtle, murray river turtle, and mississippi map turtle in either a large aquarium 1000 gallons plus or an indoor pond?

They'll all have slightly different requirements, but any reason as to why such a diverse group? Picking a group that is more native to your area is usually the better option.

I just really like mixing different species if it will work like at my house now I have an enclosure with 2 gray tree frogs,2 barking tree frogs, 1 baby whites dumpy tree frog, and 2 russian fire salamanders and they all get along just fine and they are from different areas I also just like the variety. Can you please rate the siebenriocki snake necked turtle for me on how it would do with a red ear slider like you did with the river murray turtle and other turtles I listed?

Siebenrock's snakeneck are a bit more temperature sensitive, so you will need to stay on top of it. They seem like they can go with RES (more on that later) but they also get pretty big.

One major thing you need to realize is that any turtle species can be aggressive (to the point where they need permanent physical separation). This applies to pretty much all male RES, and a good number of female RES. Other species can be aggressive as well, and it often appears suddenly.

Thanks Steve for the reply I have an important question though I need answered. So I went to a reptile store yesterday and decided to check out the turtle section and to my surprise in one of the turtle turtle tubs he had red ear sliders, west african sidenecked turtles, and pink belly or new guinea snappers all together in the tub so I asked him are the new guinea snappers aggressive at all towards the other turtles and he said not with other turtles depending on the species but more with the owner/handler he also said sometimes they will nip the other turtle species but thats about it, also the turtles were all adults. Do you think that a pink belly snapper would do well with a red ear slider since I keep hearing mixed things about the pink belly snappers on other forums and websites but most of what I found says they can be nippy but overall a good turtle to mix with a red ear slider what do you think about that info and can you rate or prioritize the pink belly snapper/elseya novaguinea on how it would do with a red ear slider for me?

It appears they are only good with other Elseya and Emydura species, nothing particular was said about them and RES... though I also see a few sites saying they are great community turtles. As for ranking turtles, I have no clue, you should go over each ones care sheet but always have a plan to immediately separate them if you have to. It's hard to say if owner/handler has a significant role in the aggressiveness. I'm sure it has some impact but that could result in different issues, like stress and disease not just aggression.

I just went on another turtle forum and researched for the new guinea snapper and it sounds like a aggressive turtle that will take chunks out of other turtles so it doesn't sound like a good option at all but correct me if i am wrong about them and they aren't aggressive one guy said they are one of the most aggressive turtles in the hobby and can't be kept with different species of turtles is this true or not? I just really want to mix a pink belly snapper with a red ear slider and some other species of turtles like the west african side necked turtle, and the siebenrocki snake necked turtle for example I just don't know if it would be a good idea or not i am just confused about their temperament because I keep hearing mixed things about them do you think it would be a good idea to mix a pink belly snapper with those other turtle species?

I think I came across the same mixed opinions so I would keep them away from a RES.

Well, that's why they call them Snappers! So far all my turtles get along. No snappers in the bunch. :-)

Ya pink belly snappers definitely sound aggressive and I heard even a nibble can cause serious damage so that species of turtle is a no go I think I will replace them with a european pond turtle to go with the other turtles like a red ear slider, western painted turtle, african side neck turtle and siebenrocki snake neck to name a couple of turtles to go with the european pond I know a european pond turtle would work but how would a blandings turtle do with the others meaning would their requirements differ and it would't work out or could a blandings turtle work out with some of the turtles I listed?

Cohabitation is possible with Blanding's turtle but with the usual warnings about males. You also need (according to ATP) to heavily plant the tank (live or plastic plants, and driftwood) and feed them separately.

Thanks steve for the info on the blandings turtle but why must I keep them separate from the other turtles during feeding time is it because blandings turtles are to voracious of turtles during feeding time or is it something else can you explain it to me please?
