I have wanted this turtle for at least 15 years..and yesterday, I finally got her..at least i think she's a she. her claws are long in front, but the guy at the reptile store said that usually males have a concave plastron (sp?) and she doesn't. But I guess we'll wait and see. Today, her name is Crush, I love the movie Finding Nemo, and that first turtle scene is my favorite. I just hit rewind and replay so i can watch my serene scene over and over again. OK..I'm obessed with turtles..and have been since the age of 16, and yesterday i turned 50! so it's been awhile that I have had this love of turtles. Oops..my name is Penny, and I'm very grateful to have found a site specific to red eared sliders. I have already informed my children, that they will be Crush's care taker when I'm gone..since she will outlive me! Thanks so much for this website..and I look forward to learning more about my turtle!

Welcome to the forum! How long is your turtle without the curve of shell? If he/she is over 4 inches you will be able to tell gender. The concave method of telling gender isn't the most accurate for RES. Best way to tell is by the nails and tails. Males have long front nails, and longer thicker tails. If you want to post pictures, we can help you do the ID. Of course we'd love to see some pictures anyway.

Greetings PenTurtle! I'm so glad you finely got your wish! RES have lots of personality and are very social. I hope you have many years of joy with yours.
