General Care Discussion :: Turtle affection

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I have a gold thread turtle her name is Dayna (2.5" -3") she is a very happy girl. She is an only turtle. Lately we have noticed that she has taken to being very affectionate towards us. She wants to be pet and held and she holds onto your finger like if she was holding your hand. I know it sounds dumb but it really feels like she is trying to be affectionate.
Is she looking for another turtle to be friends with or is this just how she is?
If she is looking for someone to hangout with should I get the same kind of turtle or is that all preference? Dayna is my first turtle, I've had her for about 7 months now.

need to know..
55 gal tank
3 small cichlid
1 GT turtle
Aqueon 1250 circulation pump
ABTA half the length of the tank
3 UVB bulbs 8-10 inches from tank
2 150 basking bulbs 8-10 inches from tank
2 cascade 1000 canister filters
medium lava rock deco
black sand and golf ball sized river rocks
random silk plants
floating golf ball as toy
sunken ping pong ball as toy
slab stones under the basking areas
new food daily, no slimy junk.
organic red kale
organic dandilion greens
carrots
freeze dried river shrimp (treat)
Zoo Med Natural Maintenance Formula Aquatic Turtle Food (how often should I feed these? I'm scared of her getting too much protein.)

Sounds like she just has an outgoing personality... RES are known for this, I'm sure some turtles will act similarly.

Turtles don't need other turtles... they don't socialize unless they want to mate or want safety (a bale basking together).

How much of the Aquatic Turtle Food is she getting now? About 1/3 - 1/4 the head size should be enough in addition to the other stuff you're offering. You can probably reduce the canister cleaning too.

My female Albino Red Ear Slider named " Allota" is just over 3 inches and she has displayed similar traits to what you have described here. She is with the male Albino Red Ear Slider named " Sunshine " as well as their hybino Red Ear Slider buddy (no name yet). I am not really sure if it is really a mate issue more than a personality thing. Sunshine tends to ignore me unless I put the food in, that of course gets his attention. The hybino is still fairly young and it has not gained its personality yet though it is starting to follow me around a bit. But Allotof wants to be handled and shows the affection. Maybe its a female thing lol. I have a large Hypo adult female 11 inches long that is lovable with affection as well with reaching out her neck and wanting her neck rubbed while enjoying it. She likes being picked up and rest on my lap too. The big male that she is with ignores me unless its feeding time. I just can't explain it other than their own personalities. The only time they spend time together is their basking periods when the natural instincts kick in sharing the UVA and UVB lights laying on each other as they do in the wild.

Many chinese golden thread turtles have a odd looking carpace (top shell) and its cute pushing itself up off the glass lolol Looks like it has a straining aggravated look on its face that is funny. But yes, it looks very healthy and a outstanding turtle. Congrats ! A very nice set up for it as well . :D
