Hi All,

My boyfriend has a 17 year old RES that lives in an outdoor pond, about 130 gallons, in South Florida. Over the past 6 months, it has "blown up" ,.....as in its legs, neck, and butt area have gotten huge. It eats guppies and turtle flakes and lives with a few gold fish. I just want to know if anyone has seen this before, or if there is anything to do to help it out. I am trying to convince him to bring it to a vet if this is not common. I do not know if this is an urgent madical issue, or if is just severely overweight. Please just let me know your comments and thoughts. The pictures taken are of him after about 2 hours of sunning, so the shell is very dry.

Thanks so much!

Hi, I've seen it posted here once before. I only remember the face/neck areas shown, but it was quite bloated. It was several years ago, so I don't remember all the details but swelling like that might indicate some sort of organ failure. I think a vet visit would be appropriate.

Looks like edema (tissue swelling / water retention).
It is a symptom of a serious underlying problem, not a sickness itself. So there aren't any home remedies.

Also Shell Rot, would should also be brought to the vet. If not stopped, the infection could spread to the body cavity and then it gets really serious.

The white scutes look like an old fungal infection, though the secondary infections they could cause are far more problematic.
