Habitat - Indoor :: Chart somewhere?

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Sun May 15, 2011 10:59 pm   Chart somewhere?

Hey guys. I thought I saw a chart somewhere one time that said the weight of the water and tank per tank size, but I've been looking on the forum and main site for 20 minutes now and cant seem to find it. Anyone have the link? :P

this may sound silly but the weight of the tank and the water concerns me as its very heavy. Im kinda afraid it will break the floor

Tank calculator and popular sizes here: http://www.redearslider.com/calculator.html

Water is about 8.3 pounds per gallon.

I know you probably know nothing about the structure of the average second story floor but do you think a 50 gallon tank would be okay on a second story level?

Absolutely. The aquarium's weight is distributed so it ends up not weighing very much.

Any building unless the floors have rotted will hold it. But I am an engineering student, so I would be more than happy to come up and inspect it for you! :)

Good to hear :) weight is my biggest phobia. I always worry the things on the floor are too heavy for the floor. even when im at the mall or something I get concerned. Any tank size you wouldn't recommend?

The house isn't new its at least 40 years old but its def not rotting! very well kept

I'm embarrassingly desperate for a tank size upgrade for these guys. Finally have the cash

No, any aquarium will be fine.

I live in a mobile home (Alabama trailer trash baby!) and I have a 200 gallon waterbed and a 90 gallon aquarium in my room. Now I did place it over the I-Beam just for fun.

Aquariums distribute a load of about 90lbs per sq. foot. Your bed probably puts more stress on the floor then the aquarium would.

**Edit**

I have a 55 gallon aquarium, but you live a little too far. Check craigslist or your local newspaper.
With my new 90 gallon, altogether I spent about $700.

Place the tank perpendicular to the floor joists and against a load bearing wall. You can easily have a 100+ gallon tank up there. I picked up a used 100 gallon and metal stand on CL for $100 in Brooklyn.

How does one figure out where these joists and load bearing walls are?

Load bearing walls run perpendicular to the rafters. And basically you use a stud finder to locate the joists.

Really, anywhere in the room will be fine. I've never heard once about an aquarium breaking or falling through the floor.

Over analyzing is fun!

Over analyzing is making me feel better! Maybe I shouldn't be an accounting major but an engineering major

Anyone who can balance a checkbook can be an accountant.

If you really want to over analyze, you'll need a deep scanning stud finder that way it can distinguish over the different densities of the carpet, padding, etc.

I think joists will be laid across the narrowest and longest part of your apartment which should be the same direction as your wood floor slats. Either way, just put it next to a load bearing or exterior wall and you'll be fine.
