Hey I have a female RES who is about 6 years old, I have had her for about a year now, she is pretty lazy to be honest, but sometimes she gets hyper, I just bought a Yellow Bellied Slider today from my local pet store, the YB is a male and about 2 years old, I was wondering if it would be ok to keep them together? They have been together tonight for about 6 hours now, and it looks as if they are getting along fine, just looks as if they are playing most of the time, well my YB is always in my RES's face trying to play lol but my RES keeps charging at him and he swims away, any advice would be great,

Thanks

Chloe :)

Well I'm not sure, but I don't think that turtles actually try to "play" with each other. This attempt to "play" and the charging may all be signs of curiosity and may lead to aggression. I would monitor them closely if they are already displaying like this, and at the first sign of any dangerously aggressive behavior then I would separate them. How big are they, is there a significant size difference?
Spike - 8 mo old RES 3.5 inch
Ike - 2 mo old RES 1.5 inch

There is only about 2-2 1/2 inches difference in their size, there has not been any signs of aggression towards each other just the charging.

You can only wait and see, however these things don't usually work out and one or both will escalate the situation.

If your tank is big enough you could look into getting a divider...

Turtles are like preschool kids. A 3 three year old goes into preschool and hangs out for a day and thinks it's fun, until they realize they have to come back there every single day for a whole school year. Then it ain't so fun anymore. Get my drift?

Hurricane and Typhoon have always lived together, so, they don't know what it is like to live alone. Well, the turtle who had first, she owns that tank because it's always been her's. Now, with this new turtle moving in, she's probably going to be okay at first but she may be aggressive or territorial over her space. It depends on how tolerant they both are willing to be. Remember though, no one gets along perfectly all the time.

Also, YB and RES can still breed, so, they might be making babies, lol :P
Phryne - Japanese bobtail, 11 y.o.
Hurricane - RES, approx. 19 y.o., 7.00in. long
Typhoon - RES hybrid, approx. 19 y.o., 8 in. long
Sadie - RES, approx. 30+ y.o., 11.5in. long
Sophie - Colombian red tail boa, 15 y.o., 5 ft. long
