Hello from PA. I have 2 red ear sliders. at least 2 yrs old. My family and I are a little concerned about 1 of the turtles. We noticed today that he is very limp. Does not want to move. head is down. Something is coming large is coming out of the cloaca. It is dark in color and as wide as the tail. Is it the intestine? I did not notice that until when I came home from work. But, he seemed to be trying to expell something. But, nothing else is happening.

do u have gravel in the tank? gravel is bad he could have ate some and now its stuck, i would recommended a herp vet visit.

Q: Every now and then, my pet turtle looks like their insides are coming out of their tail. What is that, and does is it my turtle?

A: This is commonly known as prolapse. What’s happening is that our insides are coming out of our opening on the tail. This is our intestines and our reproductive organs. It doesn’t hurt much, but it is very annoying. It’s a normal occurrence and we don’t know why it happens. We are not aware of this being an important body part, so please make sure you watch us to make sure it goes back in. If this happens a lot, it may cause distress. We might need the help of a veterinarian. If your turtle is on dry land when this happens, put us in luke warm water to help keep it moist.
