Hello everyone..., I know that most turtle see in colors.., but just how far can they actually see? I mean see clearly. Especially red eared sliders.., as i have a couple in my pond and have been wondering if they can acutally see who, or what is walking up to the pond.
Any one have a clue???

Thanks

Only thing i can tell you, is that they can see pretty well. There is this pond i go fishing in that has turtles in it (not sure if they're wild or were released there at some point) and as soon i get within 10 feet of them they jump back into the water. I'm sure they spotted me way before the 10 foot range.

Their eyesight is much better for distance (up to a point) than at close range. For locating food relatively nearby, they depend more on smell than sight.

They see really clearly, I think.
Firstly, they always look me in the eye, even from close up. Finding the eyes immediately in such a huge being with different shape is amazing.
Secondly, they recognise me and their behaviour is quite different if someone else approaches. It has nothing to do with clothes because they see me in different colours all the time.

Is this in a tank? .., or in a pond setting?

Outdoor pond in summer. But even when they were smaller (many many years ago) I noticed that they always looked me in the eyes through the indoor aquarium.

My input to the color issue is that I always feed my turtles after dark and I wear a white tee shirt. They are always beggers but when I come in the room wearing the white tee shirt they really put on a show. When I am a colored shirt they are not as animated. They can see color!
