My 40 gallon turtle tank recently got cracked :( So I'm thinking of repairing it.How should I do that??Should I just use Aquarium Silicone on both sides of the crack? Anyway I found it Cracked one day and the Heater was broken in half,My turtle was fine and there was not an injury in sight. Now im keeping him in a spare tank.I need some help because I feel bad keeping him in such a small tank.Any answers would be appreciated... :|

ive had this happen b4, if its just a crack you can use aquarium safe silicon. let it dry for at least 24hours. than u probably want to do a water test outside b4 you set up the tank

I think it's generally recommended not to try to repair just the cracked pane. You could replace the whole pane though, if you're up to the challenge!

If you have the money, Petco is doing a $1 per gallon sale on tanks up to 55 gallons, so you could get a new 40 for $40.

yeah fixing a cracked tank is like fixing a cracked windshield eventually it might decide to crack again or even shatter. If petco is still doing its deal I would look into it. I think they top out at the 50gal but for $50 you can't beat that, upgrade and no worries down the line.

Okay..But How do you all think the tank broke in the first place? Is it because of the heater?Every time a use a heater they all crack.

maybe poor quality tank, the heat from the heater could cause it to crack with high enough heat and severe cold. the other idea is the turtles might be banging the heater into the sides, i know mine do that and have since replaced my heater with a rena unbreakable one.

I didn't repair the 40 gallon..My dad said it couldn't be repaired so I looked at another aquarium I had lying around.
It wasn't so bad,So I took some silicone and repaired it.Tomorrow I will test it.And i just checked its dimensions.Looks like I had a bigger tank all along!(50 gallons)I hope so.-_- Anyway I will post pictures soon. Thanks all.Hope it will work for my Raph..

I'm not sure what you're saying... you can stop a leak with silicone, but you are not fixing the crack. It will not address the weight and pressure from the water.

i guess the tank deal isn't available to you. personally if my parents knew that i had a tank that could put 50gal of water on the floor they would have bought me a new one when i was a kid. even if it meant spending the next few month mowing the lawn and taking out the trash i would try my best to make sure it happened. the amount of damage that 50gal of water can do to their house is substantial.

For real, that can cause a lot of damage especially if you're upstairs and it goes through the floor. If you're having repeating cracking issues maybe it's your support. Are your tanks on a tank stand? A table? Is the tank entirely on the surface or is it hanging over the sides at all?
