Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

original [ok, so im gonna use rock as a substrate. and so my tank would get dirty fast. ive seen under gravel filters made with pvc to keep debris from getting trapped and keeping the tank crystal clear. my question is ho can i do this? i have a rena xp3 that i would hook it up to. its a 65 gallon tank and ill tell u any other info you will need. dimensions are 36L x 18W x 24H]

ok, so i have decided on how i am going to do this but im not sure on a few things. i plan on covering the bottom with eggcrate and than putting pvc ontop with holes drilled in it everywhere. but one question is how much pvc should i use and what pattern should i use on the bottom. and i was thinking of 1/2inch pvc. how does this sound to ppl? or should the pvc be under the eggcrate?

DO NOT USE GRAVEL!!! Please. It will kill your turtle. It will eat it, and it will get stuck inside your turtle. Check out the sticky about gravel. http://www.redearslider.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12532

Just go with the canister filter that will keep your water perfectly clean. ...well, it should.

its not actually gravel. they are large rocks. ive been around the block a few times, i know what im doing for turtle care. this is more or less to improve the aesthetics of the tank. and if i said under large river stone filter ppl would probably just think im weird and question why i didnt say undergravel. to clarify, im not using gravel. im using LARGE RIVER STONES

I've never constructed one personally, but here is a link to one that I was considering:

http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/ug_jets.php

basically, you would run a series of pvc pipes over the bottom of your tank (not as many or as complex as the example) that would get hooked up to your filter or powerhead or something, they would spray the debris toward the filter. Then you put something like a layer of egg crate down on top and put the rocks on that. That way it provides a surface for the rocks to sit on and the holes are large enough for the muck to slip through.

I've done something similar to what you're talking about but I think I'd give the link smurf provided a try. While I have tons of little holes in my pvc, it seems there's no really "big" wave moving up like I expected. It's possible I drilled too many holes. However, I did unplug one of my filters to see how much debris settled on the bottom and when I plugged it in a few days later, the jets did seem to push up all the waste that had settled to the bottom.

Here is my setup:

I would make all the holes go in the same direction that way you are creating a continuous flow of water in your tank. And put the pvc close enough so that they are maintaining that flow, you don't want any dead spots. Also, I would put the pvc under the egg crate. If they are on top then the rocks will be resting with the pvc and they will block the water flow. For the holes, I recommend going to a pet store and examining the spray bars that come with different canister filters and mimicking those. To connect the pvc to your filter, you should take the tube you want to connect with you to the store and test fit the pvc pieces to ensure a snug fit.
