You won't be finding $200 shipped deals on ebay for the Fluval FX5. Hagen started a new minimum pricing policy. Check it out. Looks like you can get them for a minimum of $270 now.

Yeah seriously. Bummer. Good thing I wasn't in the market for one or I'd be kicking myself for not buying earlier.

I've never heard of a company being allowed to set a price on a certain product. They can state a suggested retail price. But when it comes down to it, a place like PetSmart purchases the products from Hagen. Then they OWN that product, and can sell it for whatever they want. So they can make as little or as much of a profit on the item as they want. I don't think that a company can make any requirements past that point.

Nope the manufacture can set a minimum price or they'll stop distributing to that chain. I've seen it happen a few times with auto part sellers. Especially when I was in AZ. There was quite a few offroad parts dealers in town and they were always bitching or fighting about stuff like this.

I own an online retail store and I have "MAP" pricing on some products I buy from the distributor. MAP stands for Minimum Advertised Price and the distributor can penalize me or take away my account. I have also purchased product directly from manufacturers and they have also notified me that they have MAP pricing. So it's definitely real and the manufactures can and do this type of thing.

One of the sellers puts her phone number on the listing for a "bin Price" if you can't wait for the auction to end

$219 Shipped.

I'll post her number if the Mods allow.
