Hello! What a great site

I am the proud new mama of 2 baby red eared sliders. They are all set up in a very nice tank with all the fixings and they are looking quite happy.

I do have a dilema though and would like some input. My question is......is it ok to travel with turtles? Crazy question perhaps but you see, we have a cottage about an hour & a half from where we live. We cannot leave them alone for the w/end because well, obviously, they need to be fed. I was wondering if it would be ok for us to bring them along in a container of some sorts..in a cold car? Would that maybe be too tramatizing for them? I would ask my neighbour to come feed them while we are away but she too leaves for the w/end frequently. So bottom line, would it be ok to take turtles out of their warm cozy home to spend the w/end in a non-heated container?

Really looking forward to some thoughts on this & I am really enjoying all this turtle talk! lol

It would probably be better to not feed them than to take them in a cold car. If you can, it would be best to get an automatic fish feeder, the one from walmart. If you break up the pellets into like 1/3rds, they go through the feeder. Cold turtles get sick fast.

Also, it probably wouldnt kill them to go a weekend without food.

welcome to a great informative turtle site. I would leave them without food for a weekend rather than keep them in a cold car. Respiratory infection is a common killer of baby turtles.

Just feed them a little more the next two days and they will be ok for a couple of days (not more than 2 and a half to 3). If you can get an automatic feeder they are good also but a little costly and a little difficult to govern the amount or which turt gets what but ok in a jam.

It is a good sign that you are on this site so early in your turtles lives. You and your turtles will be happier for it. Good luck and I look forward to your participation in the forum.

Well thank you so much for the info. I will look into the automatic feeding thing for sure! I didn't think of that at all.

I love these little guys so much, they are so cute & funny and I want to be sure to take care of them the best way possible.

I asked the same question at the pet store lastnight and was told the same, that it is preferable to leave them at home (summer time, not so bad but definately not in winter). Besides, they do have guppies in the tank with them if ever they do get very hungry.....but they are way too fast, the turtles can't keep up! lol

Their names are Sheldon & Cherry (we got them right after Christmas.. we were told they are male & female but not sure yet really...too young)
