Equipment Review and Discussion :: new filter for moxie

Hi guys,

I'm hoping you can help me out in choosing a new filter for Moxie's tank. I've only ever used fluval submersible filters, but I'm considering the ones that hang over the side of the tank because I think it would work with her tank setup. She's in a 29 gallon tank. She has an above tank basking area on one side, and the tank is filled to about 3-4 inches below the lip of the tank, just low enough that she can't grab on and pull herself out. What do you think? Should I go for a side hanging filter, or just get a more powerful submersible? I'm hoping that those of you with more experience can offer some advice on which is more efficient and which is easier to maintain. I'm also looking for something less than 60 dollars if possible. As far as hang on filters go, i've been really happy with the Aquaclear filters. They're cheaper than a lot of other brands, but have been the most reliable (in my experience anyway), and i like that they don't use pre-made filter cartridges. They're cheaper to maintain, and the biological filtration is excellent. That being said, i've only used them on my goldfish tank and not a turtle tank, so it's not turtle-specific experience, but hopefully it's a help!

I'd go with a canister filter and save yourself having to buy again. Rena XP1's are in that price range, and they would function for a 29 gallon, but I'm sure you'll need to upgrade that tank in the near future. I would splurge on the Rena XP3 for around $120 (on ebay) and you should never have to replace another filter! Plus, it won't take up space in the tank.

S-Chick -- I also have a 29 gallon tank and I use a canister, Marineland 350 Magnum. It does just fine. It is easy to clean and does a great job in keeping the water clear. What ever you buy you will need to have a 5 times per hour exchange in your volume exchange. Canister is the way to go. m.

I just got a Rena XP4 and i have a 29 gallon. I though it would be too much but it has an adjustable flow control so its perfect and it does 450gph and is made for tanks up to 250 gallons.

I got mine for 175 though a mom and pop place and paid in cash. But they usualy go for 230ish. Honesly get a big canaster. If you pay 100 or so for a hang over filter, you'll have have to spend another 200-250 later on for a bigger one, so might as well get a big one that will last a long time!

Thank you for the suggestions. Unfortunately splurging isn't an option at the moment I've got to find something that will be sufficient for now. Probably almost anything would be better than the Fluval 2 I've got in there now.

I'd go for the Aquaclear or another h.o.t. filter. We need a picture update!

For a H.O.T filter, an Aquaclear, specifically an Aquaclear 70 (You can use it with a canister when you upgrade in the future). I've used one in a 20-long with one eastern painted. You would most likely need to extend the intake down further. Since the water level will be high, you wouldn't need to add to the lip any.

If I were you I would get a Marineland Penguin 350b filter, it's only $27.00 and it works pretty good on my 53 gallon, so it should work great on a 29 gallon!
