Feeding and Nutrition :: Do I over feed?

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Post Posted: Mon Sep 08, 2008 10:41 pm   Do I over feed?

I have three res, 4", 3", 2.5" all 1yr old.

I feed them twice a day with pellets (reptomin). I drop maybe 15 pellets in each feeding. Is that to much? I also give them krill, lettuce, and another brand of pellet that contains vegetables but whenever I feed these it is in place of the pellets not in addition.

Thanks.

15 pellets for all three? It sounds like that's about right, but are you sure each turtle is getting their fair share? 2.5 inches is tiny for a one year old, which leads me to think he's not getting enough to eat.

Also, at their age, they should be getting a headful of pellets every other day, and veggies daily. Take a look at the nutrition sticky notes to see what good vegetables there are to offer.

Yeah, and start thinking about separating them. You might not think it's a big deal now because they've been playing nice, but when they turn on each other it'll be quick, so you'll need to at least have a plan in place.

If you're feeding 15 pellets per feeding and you're feeding twice a day, that's 10 pellets per turtle per day. I think, based on their size, I'd drop it down to 15-20 pellets per day instead of per feeding.

Also, make sure that everyone is getting their share. Big turtles tend to hoard, and that might explain why one turtle is drastically smaller than the other two.

I give them green leaf lettuce now but only the 4" res seems to eat it. What other veggies are ok? I also tired banana once but it sunk to the bottom and they never reteived it.

The reason for the size diffrence is I got the 4" at the same time my sister got the other two. One year later hers had not grown and were not being cared for, so I adopted them. They are doing alot better now.

I have a 5gal I will set up as a feeding tank any suggestions or tips on how to set it up, do i need a filter or just a water change, should I buy something to treat the water before putting them in, I have well water now but will be moving to an area that has town tap water.

So it looks like everyone goes by head size for pellet feeding, and I should only feed pellets every other day, and veggies every other day.

I will keep an eye out for aggression and start thinking about my options if they seem to become mean with each other in anyway. So far they seem great together even at feeding time.
