Equipment Review and Discussion :: Tank/filter leak alert.

I saw this in a catalog the other day advertised for a sump pump overflow alarm. It is like a smoke alarm, only for water! And I got to thinking(I know, never a good thing ), why can't I use this in case one of my filters starts to leak, or my tank springs a leak? I really don't want 240 gallons of water on my floor. It is very inexpensive, and you just have to replace a 9V battery every so often(like when you replace you smoke alarm batteries). So I am thinking about buying two, one for inside my stand, in between my two Fluval FX5's, and one outside my stand, on the flood somewhere.

So what do you think? Is it worth it? I mean you have to be home to hear the alarm anyway right? But what if you are home, and you don't notice it leaking until hours later? I think it would be invaluable then. Don't you?

For how cheap they are, I'd be tempted to buy one and test it out, I mean, you aren't out much if it doesn't work, and if it does, I agree, it's a good idea, esp if it happens when you're home, cuz if you're out, you'd be like, oh, that sucks, but if you're home and it happens, you start blaming yourself, like, if only I had checked one extra time ...

unlike most others, it has a flexible sensor arm and it's made in canada NOT china so the construction and parts are more reliable.

the flood alarm saved my [---] this morning actually when my one year old opened one of the latchs on my XP3.

i have to admit though: my father owns this company.

NO WAY, THATS AWESOME!! If I buy one it will definitely be from you guys!! I just wish I could get one that has a longer sensor arm, so I can have the sensor in the stand, but have the alarm outside, so I can hear it better.

we sell alarms with extended arms actually. i was supposed to update the website - dammit. i really need to get on that!

the extended arms are significantly more expensive though - you can check out the prices at builderdepot.com but if you PM me i can get you one at a discount.

NO WAY!! I love this forum. Wow, what are the odds that someone actually owns a company that makes the exact product I am looking for, being on a turtle forum!!!! That is so sweet. I think I will need about five feet to get in the stand form the back, while still being able to hang it where I can easily get to it. Do you know if they work on thick carpet? My basement is finished, and has wall to wall carpet. I was wondering if I should buy another normal length one or two to monitor the carpet around the stand. But I don't know if the carpet would mess the sensor up. What do you think?

my dad bought two of these for our basement... it works great and is very loud!
