i have two turles, i have no idea their ages. according to the new i found in internet, the gender of the turtle can be determine after they getting adult, not when they still baby...
so i got confuse to pick a name for them...
do you have any suggestion how to identify male baby or female baby??? sport mama...

i have two Red Ear Sliders.. i do want to add more but different type, is it possible for them to get along together?? txguy

On identifying male or female, I'm afraid that you won't be able to tell until they are about 4" long. Then it will become obvious. The males grow extremely long front toenails (up to an inch long) and the females...don't. The males also have longer, much thicker tales with the cloaca further towards the end of the tale. Eventually females get bigger - from 9" up to 12" long. Males usually grow to be 7" to 9" long.

Some people solve the name problem by giving genderless names. My turtle, for instance, is named Spot. Other names are Spike, Speedy, Peanut....you get the idea.

Alternatively, you can just pick names that suit their personalities and if it turns out they are the wrong gender, either change them or just live with it. I knew a male turtle named Lulu who was perfectly content with his name.

On getting more turtles, my advice would be to live with the ones you've got until much further down the line. As they grow, you'll need much more space and you'll probably have to separate them (most turtles fight if housed together and will injure or either kill each other). That means not only space for big aquariums but also additional filters, lights, etc.

Some people on here do get more turtles because they are so interested and have the money and space to provide all the tanks and equipment that are required. But they are relatively rare.

Why don't you wait a couple of years and see what it's like when your turtles grow up before deciding if you want to dedicate so much space and money to more turtles.

actually, i don't really want to add more turt, but my family asking me to keep his turts...
his turt is RES too. i have no choice than to accept it i will have it this sunday... i can't wait

guys, how to determine the age of the turt, can it measured by the size of the body? or??

My Spot is 5 years old. He's a male, 7" long. He is Mr. Personality and very friendly. I love him dearly.

Unless you know when they hatched, you can't know a turtle's age with any certainty. They live a long time - up to 40 years in captivity. Their growth rate is determined by a lot of variables - diet, genetics, health. Most seem to grow to around 4" in SSL (straight shell length) in the first year. So if your turtle is less than 4" he's probably (but not for sure) less than a year old, and if he's more than 4" he's probably more than a year old. You can't say much more than that.

No, it's not advisable to add more turtles. Turtles are solitary creatures by nature and may fight if met with another turtle.

Turtles don't feel lonely. They have very basic emotions, really. Yep, that's Spot in her avatar.

erm, no. But they have slightly different feeding habits and behaviour and their size is way bigger than a RES, too. But the care is basically the same as a RES.
