My name is Maria, and after reading almost the entire website on RES turtles  , I decided to join this forum. Our family adopted a baby RES turtle 7 weeks ago, and I'm the one who takes care of it. I actually never liked reptiles, but this little turtle has changed that. My two boys, 7 and 5, wanted it, but I think I like it more than they do! It's name is Limu (Lee-Moo) and it comes from a Hawaiian story about a turtle with the same name. I keep referring to it as "it" because I have no idea if it's a boy or a girl because it is still too young. We bought him at 6 weeks old not knowing it was illegal for the vendors to be selling it. They had many though! Limu is doing well, and I hope it will continue this way as read and learn more about how to care for it.

Maria :D

No, but we do try to visit every few years. Our favorite island is Kauai. Sometimes I wish we did live there! :)

You'd think differently after going grocery shopping. The cost of living is horrendous out there. It is gorgeous though. When I get a lot older, I might just pay for the beauty

We go grocery shopping there every time we go, so I know all about the high prices. ;) The things that deter us from moving there are being too far from friends and family, the bugs, and not being able to find a suitable way to make a living.

We bought the book when we went to Maui, and my boys loved it so much we had to buy the Opihi book and the Limu book where he finds a mate in Kauai. They are all great stories. Do you live on the big island?

ohno, i wish i could afford to live on the big island.
i was born & raised in Kailua, Oahu, (Windward/East side of Oahu). I love this side of the island....there's less traffic, less people, no big chain stores, even a smaller mall. and if i need to go to a larger store/mall, it's just 40 minutes away. :D
have you been to any other islands besides maui??

Yes, I have been to Oahu twice, and as a family we have been to Kauai twice and Maui once. I love Kauai because it seems to be the least commercialized of all the islands I have visited, however, I was shocked to find a WalMart and Costco there this summer. But much of the island's beauty still looks to be untouched. Do you ever visit the mainland?
