hello everyone! i'm new to the board, but have been browsing it for a while. i bought this filter, but it doesn't seem like it's filtering anything. the "indicator" on this stays up the entire time. is there anything i can do or check for to see if it's doing it's job properly? o, it's in a 10 gallon tank. i just bought this yesterday.

I just got a 4+ for my outdoor play area, and the indicator popped up as soon as i turned it on. It's not clogged and it's moving the water well so i'm not worried about it. I've seen that others have had this problem too (not really a problem i guess just an annoyance). Is it moving water? If it is i wouldn't worry. You should also think about adding some charcoal to it, either buy the little inserts or use loose carbon in a media bag. Mechanical filtration alone won't cut it for a messy little turtle!

thanks! i can still see debris in the tank and when it flows by the filter it doesn't get sucked in. i'm new to this, but trying to educate myself as much as possible.

Yeah i noticed that with mine too, since i got mine for a temporary enclosure i'm not too concerned with it being a top-notch filter, but if you feel like your water isn't staying clean you might want to consider getting a different filter. I would think it would do the job in a 10 gal tank though. BTW, i think it's really great that you're educating yourself to give your turtle a happy life.

I have a Fluval 2+ and have only used it for very small turtles in small tanks. It basically pushes water---don't count on it to pick up things like poop unless pieces are very small and they're close to the intake.

yeah, I had a Fluval 4+ in a 10 gallon tank, which the filter is rated for 57 gallons, and it couldn't even take care of that! I took it back today. Fluval is supposed to be a really great filter so I don't get what the deal is! Luckily my birthday is in about week though and I'm hoping many people make a generous donation to my canister filter fund for my new 75 gallon tank.

Agreed. I had the same experience with my Fluval 2 in my 20 gal long tank. It basically just helps with water quality/clarity & keep smell down. I had a fishnet handy to scoop/skim out any larger particles (like uneaten food) I wanted removed.

Having said that, it's great for these little tanks since it doesn't cause a huge current either.

Fluval canisters are popular, and many say they do a good job in the tank. The Plus (+) series is an internal filter, which is a whole different story. Internal filters, no matter what brand, can't be compared to a good canister.

Why dont you get different pads, like the carbon ones to see if that improves performance. It improved mine
