OK, I am sorry if this sounds kind of dumb, but I have a Tetra whisper filter rated for 20 gallons in my ten gallon tank and there is no smell or anything floating around, but a lot of stuff simply stays on the bottom in between these large rocks that I have. I was thinking of adding a small hang on filter that i can get for free that is probably rated for ten gallons in order to help with the filtration. Anyway, should I expect my filter to pick up things like poop and leftovers to leave the bottom mostly clean, or is my filter just too weak? The suction part is almost to the bottom and it sucks in the stuff floating around, but nothing on the bottom. Again, this sounds dumb, but I am really just curious.

Even my xp3 doesn't pick up all of the goop on the bottom. I keep a small hand held (kerosine) syphon on hand to suck out the extra stuff. I've also heard of people using turkey basters for the same thing.

If you can get the extra filter for free, grab it! You can never have too much filtration.....As far as poop and other stuff on the bottom, all tanks, big and small have whats called "dead spots" where things settle. Just use a small fish net or turkey baster to get rid of it.

Thanks. Yeah, the filter I have is the submerisble Tetra Whisper Filter which is pretty good, but I can get this blue hang-on filter that was pretty new that was used in a 5 gallon fish tank, but like you said, it wouldn't hurt. Anyway, what is your take on undergravel filters?

I don't think they would work very well for a turtle. Just not efficient enough, plus there is no room for bio-media (at least the ones I'm familiar with).

well i am stuck with one and i was just wondering if i should use it, but i am thinking i will keep it its original length that way my brother can use it when i give him this ten gallon set-up for his fish.
