So I just bought a large Turtle Dock, and I'm wondering, when you first buy it, is it supposed to be kind of dusty or something? When I rub it, some paint or sand seems to rub off, and I fear if I wash it, will all the paint come off too? Or is it completely normal?

I dont remember mine being dusty. You are going to wash it a lot, so if a lot of stuff is coming off, take it back. Pieces of mine eventually peel off, but its plastic like, not sandy.

I see, well when I bought it, it was the last one there, and the box seemed a little banged up, probably from the lack of turtle owners here (it's a law here that you can't sell aquatic turtles, so pretty much every pet shop has no aquatic turtles for sale, but fine to keep).

You are going to be washing it often... also, if it is "defected" try buying one online.. it would be easier then trying to track down one... they cant sell aquatic turtles in canada? strange... in the usa its illegal to sell RES under 4 inches.. And whats up with the name? I want some pizza now

When I bought my turtle dock it was dusty too, I washed it and brushed it with a toothbrush too. Just make sure to wash it really well.

Well it's just unfortunate that I live in the one Province in Canada that doesn't allow the sale of Aquatic Turtles (though it's an old rule and serves no purpose IMO), but everywhere in the country outside of here, turtles are sold commonly in pet shops, such as Vancouver or Toronto, so 90% of the turtles here are mostly driven down from the other cities (or driven up from the US), and most of the time, if you want to own a turtle here, you'll have to find someone giving one up.

Check the condition of it. A few people here get them in bad condition and had to return them. I wasn't particularly impressed with the large one I tried using.

I've had several of those docks. Some have been a little dusty - not a lot - and I just rinsed them off real well and haven't had a problem.

I rinsed mine under some WARM water, per the directions, dont go and slam it under boiling hot water. Just some lukewarm water should work fine.

After that all seems well to me.

I really dont think it makes a difference. When I clean mine, I put it under scalding hot water to kill some germs.

The first Zoomed turtle dock I got was dusty ... and I ordered it online. One thing I noticed though is the sealant they use on the buoy part (bottom) came loose in the water after a while and water was getting into it, causing a bad smell.

Since I like the Zoomed dock, I got another one and used aquarium silicone to reinforce the sealant Zoomed used. So far, so good.
