Equipment Review and Discussion :: please help! tank cracked in corner

Okay, so as I was removing Squirtle's gravel out of the tank today, the tank kinda bumped into something (dont really remember what), just a lil bump, but it still left a mark.. the corner of the tank cracked... here's pictures:



is there a place that i can go to that can just fix it up? like a hardware store or something... i mean it's just one corner & one side of the tank so it must be possible?? has it happened it to anyone before? because i would like to know how much it would cost.

... or would i really have to buy a brand new tank? (30$)

any advice would be helpful asap.. i'm worried that Squirtle wants his home back, but i can't fill up the water high until the crack is fixed because i'm scared the crack will actually break if i put more water.

i recomend getting a new tank. once the glass breaks the seals have broken and they wont hold water well

Trust me, just go get a new tank. One crack leads to a breakage..because you have now stressed the glass of the tank.

Ooooh, that's too bad. Unfortunately nothing can repair that crack. If you're handy, you can always replace the glass with another piece and silicone it on; if not, you're gonna need to get a new tank. The weight of the water will cause a crack like that to break even more.

If it is a small tank then it is not worth repairing - a crack like that would require a new piece of glass. You can get a use a plastic container as a temporary replacement.

thanks everyone! looks like i'll be buying sQuirtle a new tank with my tip money from work hehe i don't mind buying a new one if it's gona make him happy

now is it better to get a tank thats wider or taller?? bcos the one i have right now is wider, the one they sell in pet stores for turtles but ive read posts in this forum that theyre useless for turtles.

i feel bad for sQuirtle because he's been looking sad ever since i removed his gravel since his home is not "the same" as it used to be & he cant swim as much with the low water level due to the crack my poor baby

Yeah, don't buy the tank they sell that's supposed to be for turtles. Because it has a cut-out in the tank for the filter, it limits the amount of water you can put in a tank. The tank should be long not tall.

Don't feel so bad about the crack. My friend gave us a 50g square tank last night and just when we almost had it home, my husband decided to put it down and dropped it. Got a crack on it just like yours. So much for that.

Awww sorry to hear that! Guess we're both going to have to take a trip to the pet store!

The turtle tank they sold us was just long & not tall, there's no cut out? So I guess I'll be buying the same one as I did before

The longer the better because they have more room to swim around. Or you can get a stock tank that is really big around and then they still have more room to swim.

u could patch it w/ silicone, as long as you do a good job it should hold the water well

It's a pretty large crack and it's not worth the repair. Use silicone to repair a leak not a crack.

Alright, so I bought sQuirtle's new tank. They had no more 15 gallon in stock so sQuirtle is happily upgraded to a 20 gallon lol.

Anyway, I just had a question. Since there is no more gravel in his tank, is it okay to put his rocks directly on the glass? I'm scared that if the rocks move or something (somehow) that it will damage the glass and I will have to buy a new tank AGAIN.

Also, is it okay to use a TV stand as an aquarium stand? Because I saw one on sale at Wal-Mart and I figured if it can hold a gigantic TV then why not an aquarium stand. The guy at the pet store told me that that's what most people do, but the guarantee for the tank is only if its on an aquarium stand.. so if the aquarium gets a stress crack from the TV stand then the guarantee doesn't work. What do you guys think I should do?

I keep my tank on the floor because a stand for a 125 gallon was $200 or somethin crazy. Can't help you with the TV stand idea because I don't wanna say "yea, go ahead" and then see you come on in a panic because it all crashed to the floor.

The river rocks will be fine against the glass. I have several in my tank and the turts knock them around like crazy.

I used a ten gallon on a tv stand once but I'm not sure you'd want to go much higher than that unless you are positive it can stand up against the weight of the water.

Jenaero, if it was 200$ that's pretty good because the cheapest one at the pet store for my 20 gallon is 180$ on sale from 200$ lol. Looks like my turt is staying on the floor like yours!

I just don't want random bugs on the floor to crawl up into sQuirtle's tank lol
