When I was feeding my turtle the other day I noticed that the water was filled with just a bit more debris then usual. At first I thought that maybe he just kicked up some sand or something, then I noticed that the fish were trying to swim into the filter output...hmmmmm. Long story short. Water hyacinth roots, clogged filter, probably burnt filter head unit.

Rushed to the LFS, had a choice of buying an iffy used fx5(just filter no accessories) for $50 or a new eheim 2075(ultra g160) for $150...anyways ended up buying the eheim. I think if I had a working filter and had time to make pipes and stuff for the fx5 I would have gotten that. So far the eheim seems to be a nice upgrade from my last filter. The flow rate is much better and it keeps the water a lot cleaner then with my last filter. Only negative about the filter is that they put the pump to start the siphon in the worst place. Really hard to pump when the hoses are in the way. Still thinking about just grabbing the fx5 since its so cheap.

Seems like you got a pretty good deal. What type of media did it come with?

the fx5 for $50 is a good deal for a backup filter. I would just ask if you could plug it in for a second to make sure the impeller spins. Obviously you can't see the impeller on a FX5, but you should be able to put your hand on the motor assembly and feel if it's vibrating (ie impeller spinning).
