I've had my FX5 since 2008 and it works the same as it did day one! I love this filter! I recently cleaned the motor and it still runs like a champ. The filter pumps water like it did the day I bought it. Needless to say, I will never run another filter for my turtle. Just thought I'd throw that out there. I really like this filter!

Good to hear. My XP3s are still going strong too, so I don't have a chance to upgrade yet. Let's hope us slider keepers give them a reason to continue to make these for a good while.

Unfortunately the latest filters from Fluval and Rena have been total crap. The Fluval G series is a shiny box with an LCD screen, overpriced media, and a price tag that makes your eyes bug out. The latest Rena / API filter is called the Nexx... another pile of rubbish. Tiny filtration capacity with proprietary media and a pump that goes in the tank. These two filter manufacturers have gone for ease of use products marketed for the brain dead consumer with proprietary media to continuously feed their greedy pockets. Boo. One day Fluval will stop making their best filter the FX5, and API/Rena will stop making the FX series - and that will be a sad day for those in the hobby.
Luckily there's still eheim. The classic series filters are probably the best filter on the market today... the only problem is the price. They've been around for years and years and I don't think they're going away any time soon.
Then there's the generic knock-off filters. Some are decent some come with a drip tray to set the filter in (DOH!) These are a gamble.
So for now we enjoy our FX5's and our Rena XPs. In 10 years... I bet the 30 year old eheim classic series filter will be the popular filter on this forum. I guess it will be a 40 year old design then.

My Fx5's are gonna be like my 1973 Bug, old but still reliable lol;) I will replace motors, seals and anything else I have to to keep them running. There may be a day the filter's production stops but parts will be available till no more fx5's are running. Then it will still be sometime before the parts will run out, so I expect to keep mine going for atleast another 20 yrs;) Enginuity is the key my friends!
