So I've been trying to read through the website and forums but most of it kind of seems to be going over my head. I thought I'd make a thread to ask some direct questions to get at least pointed in the right direction and not be wandering aimlessly around the site without any questions being answered.
I have 7 year old RES. I recently got him a fifty gallon tank. I have a 60 gallon filter that's just pretty basic that was purchased at walmart. I was thinking that I should get a new/bigger filter because the water doesn't seem to be staying very clean and because of the water level and the filter being the over the side of the tank kind it kind of splashes every where and gets it dirtier too. Is it out of the question to consider an underwater filter to cut out on the splashing? If not what would be the best recommendation for a new filter? If possible could anyone provide links? I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

"H.O.T." (hang on tank) filters are good, though they can make a lot of splashing in low water levels. A canister filter is a good type, plus it'll include various output options. They do cost more, but are generally better filters. I would generally avoid underwater or in tank filters for larger setups.

Keep in mind that good filtration alone does not fix other water issues. Is this tank filled to the top?

It is only filled to the top so that the water can get through the filter. By the top i mean about three inches from the lip. Is there any way where I can lower the water level with the tank I have now?

I'm sorry for not being to familiar with some of these things but what exactly is a canister filter? Do they work just as well as H.O.T. filters?

canister filters work better than H.O.T. filters. the have an intake tube and an outtake tube. the finter part is exactly what it sounds like. it is a canister filled with media. for your size tank id say go with a rena xp3 or a fluval 405. but there arent exactly cheap filters. but turtles are also not a cheap pet to own

Where would be a good place to purchase a good canister filter?

It depends on which one... the more expensive ones are discounted more on auction sites like ebay. Is there a particular one you're looking for?

My main concern is just quality. I don't think I could afford something more than ninety dollars or so. But if it's necessary I will. I'm not too picky as long as they work out well.

For a 50g tank, a Rena xp3 would be a good fit. They could be had on eBay for 120. If you want to go cheap...$50 gets you a fx5-ish knock off on aqua traders. http://www.aquatraders.com/External-Filter-s/30.htm
