im currently running a zoo med 501 canister filter. previously had the reptofilter and the fluval u2. i have a 10 gallon tank right now. for some reason the zoo med and the fluval didnt suck up tiny debris left from food! it would suck in almost microscopic pieces of debris, but the food will still be sitting on the other end of the tank.... the reptofilter did the job, sucked in big chunks of left over food and poop, i had thought that if i spent more money on a filter it would work better, but both the zoomed 501 and the fluval u2 hardly sucked anything in???

im not looking for anything huge as of right now, i just want something with sucking power to atleast take up debris... otherwise i might just have to go for the huge reptofilter thats rated 125 gph as compared to the smaller one which was 90 gph.....surprisingly the zoomed 501 was only rated at 75 gph only, and the fluval was at i think 105 gph....so what should i do!! anyone have the same experiences? thanks

I've learned not to buy filters marketed as being for turtles.
We used both the Reptofilter and the Zoomed submersible, both were too pricey for what they did (or didn't) do.
Both were in a tank at the same time with about 10 gallons of water, and it still didn't pick everything up.
Turtles are just that messy, WAY messier than fish, so a good filter is a must.
We currently have a Aqueon Powerfilter 55, but it's a hang on top (H.O.T.) filter so the water level has to be really high to use it.

here is a video of the filter working... please watch it until the end.... last time i did a 50% change was 2 weeks a go and the last time before that was like a month! look how clean the water/filter stays...

i like the double filter cartridge; because the 1st retains most of the junk and then the second one cleans the water again, then the bio-wheel does the rest... note that my bio-wheel for some reason is bent a bit =) i think i dropped it way too many times... but still...it works.

also you can wash the cartridges every 2-3weeks and reuse them for like ...tsi months... if you always clean it...

i got this: Image

does the job! and helps me remember when i have to do things- paid $10 on ebay!!!

enjoy the video:
