I've been reading reviews and am leaning towards the XP3, but before I bite the bullet, I was wondering if there are any other recommendations on canister filters within my budget.

First, how big is your tank, filters should be rated 3x the regular size some go up to 5x (For the xP3 its rated 175g tank for fish, 50-60 for turtles)

Second, the rena xp3 is pretty good for your budget if you have a 50 gallon tank, but if you have a 100g+ then I think you should go with Fluval FX5 its pretty expensive, but is does the job.

Third, I would never buy any canister besides the rena or fulval, they are the best from my experience.

Well, first you should tell us the size of your tank.. Because even XP3s or Fluval 405 can't handle by themselves a 100gal with turtles. You should go for the bigger ones, like the fx5, or get a 2 small canisters combo (i.e. 2xfluval 305 or 405).
There are cheaper filter brands though..

i agree with marcus, i have an xp3 and i love it, works great. but i should have gone bigger. im nto upset about my purchase bc of how well it does work but id try for an fx5 or xp4, if both of those r out of ur budget than like i said, the xp3 works great

Planning on a 40-55 gallon tank

I only use canisters as they are easy to clean and not messy. When considering a filter pump use one that pumps at least 5 times the water volume in your tank(gph). You hear 2 or 3 times the size but usually that means sizing for fish and not how many or what kind of fish. I use and have the Marineland 350 and a Fluval 405 which are both good filters. They are sized for the tanks I have. You will have to size according to the size of your tank.

I think a fluval 405 will suffice for a 55 gal. You can find them cheaper than $175.00
