I've had my FX5 for about two years now, and recently it has begun vibrating/buzzing. The noise isn't as loud when there are no baskets in, but it's still there. I have taken it apart, cleaned it out, altered the positions of the baskets, tightened the fasteners on the intake and outlet pipes... everything - but it makes no difference. :(

The only time the noise does stop is when I reduce the outlet flow, but by this point the flow is so little that it doesn't clean the tank properly.

Does anyone have any suggestions? The noise doesn't bother me personally, as the terrapins (turtles!) are in a shed outside, but I wonder if it bothers them? If I had to listen to it day and night I'd go mad! How good is their hearing?

Cheers,

Liam

I don't think it would bother them. I've had my FX5s for about two years as well, but haven't run into this problem.

I have one of them sitting on a couple layers of cardboard to help absorb a bit of noise, and both are wrapped in pillows/blankets to muffle the sound (since they're in my bedroom). You could try setting it on cardboard or foam or something to see if that reduces the vibration.

I do not have an FX5 but I have delt with pumps over the years. Anytime there is a viabration and there is nothing stopping up or interfering with the intake or discharge there is something out of balance. Check the bearing ends and the impeller. If one vane of the impeller is chipped it may be that.
