Various accessories and equipment discussed here.

Post Posted: Thu Jul 02, 2009 8:55 am   New to tank and water stains

Yeay~!! Finally I managed to get large tank for my turtles.. I didn't buy a new brand tank instead second hand tank from the fish person who no longer need the tank. He just used the tank for 5 - 6 months.. and make a large pond for his fish. :D

I got deal for 4 feet tank RM120. Its a great price for me to get that large tank for RM120. Normally the market price will be up to RM200. Now I have 90 gallons tank.

Here some picture.

Okay, my question:

1) How to clean this tank?? It bit dusty. Can I use soap? Clorox?
2) How to get rid those water stains?

So far thats all.. will be asking more in future :P

I think vinegar will take off the stains. Looks like a great tank. :)

Nice size tank!

Don't use soap to clean it. Soap residue is very hard to get all of it off.

I use a 50/50 water/vinegar solution to clean my tanks. The vinegar (and a bit of elbow grease) should also get the water stains off.

Owh thank you :) Yeah, I'm so lucky because got great tank. Didn't have any cracks or leaking and the previous owner also is very kind.

So the ordinary vinegar (at the supermarket) will do?

Haha, elbow grease is a saying. It just means you'll have to scrub a little bit to get the stains off.

Lol, I know, english has some really strange sayings ;)
"Elbow grease" just means you might need to put a little bit of work into it. You could try scrubbing with your elbow, but I'm not sure how well it work :D

Yep, ordinary vinegar.

You could also use a mild bleach solution to disinfect the tank. Just make sure that you let it dry completely, and it has no smell of bleach when you fill it up. Just to make sure that nothing could make your turtle sick from the tank.

Okay thank you for answering my question. Since our family never used vinegar (in cooking or wat so ever), I think I have to buy one :D

Another question - Let say after all the cleaning process, how to make sure the tank is fully clean (without chemical, vinegar or bleach solution)?? Is there any test to do? Fish perhaps?

Yeah, fish would be a good tester.

I dont know what you would do with them after, if you didnt want them in the turtle tank. Do you still have the old turtle tank?

So any kind of fish will do isn't it? the small2 cheap fish.. RM1 pack of 20.

If the fish can survive then, I will not have any problem to keep them because my turtle will have them.. hahaha :D

Nice tank Azfar! ;)
The thing i don't trust about it is that it's custom made and i don't see any middle brace on the top.You could get a strip of glass 2"x the width of the tank and silicone it in the middle to avoid dangerous bowing.

I never used vinegar to clean my tanks (and i've had a lot come and go).All i do is hook up the siphon and add some hot water and start scrubbing with an algae brush or a rough dish washing sponge.Eventually it all comes off.For the really tough grime, i get a flat razor blade and "wet and scrap".Never scratched the glass.
Post some pics after you set it up ;)

Thank you Jozzep! :)

I will post some photos after I set it up.. :P definitely. Don't worry.

Anyway I don't get it by 'middle brace on the top', how to silicone it in the middle of the tank?? Or can you provide me a picture so dat I will understand more.. hihi..

Uuu.. I really scared to used the blade or rough dish washing sponge.. really it won't make a scratch?? the glass thickness is 8mm if I'm not mistaken the previous owner told me.
