Does the spraybar need to be submerged in water or can it be above the water surface?

Like any spray bar it can be above or under the water. I actually think that's how most people have theirs.

Keeping it above will help agitate the surface (prevent oily films) and oxygenate the water (good for the bio media).

i like mine above the surface. it helps agitate the surface like steve said. plus it looks pretty cool i think. my turtles play in it like a waterfall type deal

I was looking at this as well, but was wondering if the intake tube that hangs out can be extended - all the pics I saw show it to be short and my water level will be lower down the tank. Anyone know how long it can be, or if it's an aftermarket part?

I recently saw a youtube video where the guy had his spray bar a inch or so below the surface. Actually looked like a good idea that I may try.
