one of my ehiems started to bug out a few days ago. it would make a few weird grinding noises once in awhile.

while today it sounded like a small child went through a paper shredder. i cleaned it out, and it looked like nothing was wrong.. so i put it back and again!

its still within its warrenty, so im probably going to get it replaced or the motor part fixed.


has this ever happened to anyone before?

i have never heard of anyone describing a noise like that. i love it haha

my eheim had a problem like that. it sounded like their was air in the canister even though there wasnt. it would do it for a little while and then stop but randomly start again. eventually it stopped doing that but by that time i had already bought a new filter

Most probably it was cavitation. Cavitation
The formation and instantaneous collapse of innumerable tiny voids or cavities within a liquid subjected to rapid and intense pressure changes. Cavitation produced by ultrasonic radiation is sometimes used to effect violent localized agitation. Cavitation caused by severe turbulent flow often leads to cavitation damage.

I remember a thread not too long ago about canister filters having these weird moments, mine went through one maybe 6 months ago. I have a Rena XP3 and it was making a racket and try as me and my husband might, we couldn't figure it out. We cleaned it again, we took everything else, we primed the darn thing three times, and still it went on. I couldn't sleep with the noise, so I left it off for a few days. Started it back up and poof, the sound was gone and everything was running great. The moral of the story is, try turning it off for a day or two and see if it resolves itself. Or contact the manufacturer.
