MVB's are pretty strong bulbs. i have a 100 watt mega ray for my 55 gallon and i love it. i used to have a t-rex which was good but i think the mega ray is better. my only worry would be that an MVB would be too strong for a 40 gallon. just be sure that they are hanging straight down.

It'll be fine on a 40 gal breeder. Just be sure to follow all the directions and keep an eye on the water temp just to be sure :D

Either a 100-watt T-Rex or the Mega Ray would be fine. If you do get the T-Rex, get the flood not the spot version. The Mega-Ray is one type, so there's only the wattage to choose. You want to hang the bulb in a fixture with a ceramic base that's rated for at least the wattage of the bulb (and higher is better). If you use a dome, use a 10" one. Follow the mfgr's instructions for distance.

MVB's should be replaced every year instead of every 6 months like compact UVB

No, I'm talking about a regular heat lamp. Would it just last until it goes out itself or what?

And my UVB bulb box says to be replaced every year, but mine's a 10.0 UVB instead of a 5.0 just because the 10.0 was cheaper.
