so i found a 125 gallon aquarium on craigslist for 340$...
i already decided i'll probably just get another heater and
another filter to help maintain it.

so for filters..i'm looking online at petco.

i came across this canister filter..
has anyone used this?

does it work well?

it worked well but it wasnt the easiest to clean. it was hard to prime for me. everytime i would clean it it would take me forever to get it going without having air in it. when it runs without air though its really quite. have you thought about an fx5?

its a top of the line filter. they are very nice. i just recently got one.

The FX5 is a great filter. When cleaned it will pump about 850 to 900 gph which would be great for a 125 gallon aquarium. You will need to pump at least 5 times the water volume that is in you tank. The fx5 is a large filter but it is easy to clean.

you can get them on ebay for 200 bucks. i LOVE the fact that it self primes and shuts off for 2 minutes a day to get the air out of the system

Just to put in a plug for the eheim. I have a 2217 and love it. But like Daniel said it can be harder to clean because it does not have filter media baskets and it doesnt self prime. I didnt have any priming issues, but I did so with just clean water (nothing was in the tank yet so I wanst skweemish about doing it.) You can also buy a priming gadget to go with it for about $12. Also if you put the media in a nylon bag or stocking you can remove it easily for cleaning. Eheims have a tradition of being the BMWs of filters. But that is not to say they will meet everyones needs. You can get a 2217 online for about $120 so I wouldnt buy it from petco BTW.

I think there are two-three great values out there right now - the old Eheim canister like you mentioned, Renas and the FX5. The FX5 would be a perfect size for your tank. You would eventually need two of the Eheims (and I would go with the 2217 with a turtle). Honestly in your situation I would wait for a good price on the FX5 to come up on ebay. You are going to eventually have to pay around $200-250 anyway to get enough filtration. The FX5 would get you done with one purchase, one filter.

right now i have a 2234 i think..something like that for my 55 gallon.
i was hoping if i got another one made for a 90 gallon and then putting them together i my 125 i'm getting.

Then you should be fine. Like I said I love my Eheim. It will work well for you I think.
