Does the FX5 have any way to control the flow rate? Has anybody tried, or had any success with, reducing the flow rate of the FX5? Alternately, has anyone used one FX5 to filter two side-by-side tanks? (I'm not currently planning to do so, just more or less curious of the possibilities)

I had a chance to see one in operation recently and was disappointed with the noise level (compared to RENAs), the high impact of the water enterring the tank, and the size of the unit (although that is more of a minor concern).

I was already considering 2 smaller filters rather than one large one, due partly to continuity of biological filteration, but also due to the above concerns. This also seems prudent in case of failure (i.e. if one has a problem the other can temporarily ensure at least some level of ongoing filteration).

I think it does, but lessening the flow rate cuts down on the life of the motor because of the extra strain.

But they sorta solved that problem by giving you the option of 2 outflows. that way you can break it up 50/50 between each.

I hadn't noticed the noise factor, My local aquarium store has one running on a 90 or 100 gallon Koi tank and I stuck my ear right up near the filter and it wasn't noisy at all.

I do agree with you, that 2 filters is an intriguing idea. I have thought about it. My 55 gal came with an XP1, and I was thinking of when I get a larger tank to get an XP3 or XP2, so that I would have either 600gph, or 550gph. But that is going with factory gph ratings, not the flow rates of the filter that we talked about in the other thread. There are many good reasons for 2 filters, but there are some downsides.

I like the idea of two filters each with a strong bacterial colony. I think the extra maintenance would be worth it.
