Equipment Review and Discussion :: I plan to buy but I don't know do I need to buy a chiller

Various accessories and equipment discussed here.

Post Posted: Thu Jun 19, 2008 2:28 am   I plan to buy but I don't know do I need to buy a chiller

The temperature in Taipei during summer usually between 82-95 degree.
I plan to get one chiller for my turtle.
But many people say that turtle could be used to the weather that they had lived for serever years.
I never see someone use it to keep their turtles.
So I want to know if there will be a great benefit and what kind of help for her health if I use chiller.
Thank you!

During the summer how warm does the water in your tank get? Do you use an air conditioner?

Nope
There are not an air conditioner in the living room.
I don't want to use it because the AC will not be opened when we are not at home.
So the temperature would be sometimes warm and sometimes cold.

Have you tried blowing a fan across the surface of the water to cool it some?

You can also add water frozen in water bottles, just put the whole water bottle in the tank and let it float. It will cool down the temps slightly. I don't think it will hurt to have your water temps higher than 75 during the summer, just not up around 90 ...

I used it last summer two big bolltes, but the temps didn't change.
In Taiwan the temps is during 82-95 degree.
My tank is only 70 galons.

Chu-chu- Do what ever it takes to keep the temp at about 75 to 77 degrees if it takes a chiller, do it The most important thing is be keep the temp. constant. The danger comes when they get cold, hot, cold. If you can find a way to do that give it a try. Good luck!!

Hi chiuhui, I don't think you need a chiller. They are expensive and will need an exhaust port outside, so an AC would work better.

I understand that you don't want to have an AC, especially how wasteful it can be. All you need to do is keep the heat out during the day. Try keeping the windows closed and covered. People use a white or reflective material (similar to aluminum foil or those covers for car windshields) on a board or on foam and tightly cover the windows. Dark and black colors absorb heat and light instead of reflecting them, so those would not be good choices. It will keep out natural light, but you'll have a basking light for your turtle.

If it doesn't help, then you might want to run the AC for a few hours before you leave then apply the above methods. It should also help keep the cooler air in.

It has a difficult to set a AC since the tank just under the place that I could set AC.
I plan to buy TECO TR15 as below.
http://www.tecous.com/product/2/

This chiller cost and it's power billis more cheaper than AC.
Therefore I consider to get a chiller.
I just want to know will it harm to my turtle if the temps doesn't be changed.
Or any good for my turtle if using chiller.
Thank you!

It would need to be operated more frequently, so it's power consumption will add up. Couldn't you move the tank instead?

I can't.
My house is too small, also that is the best place to set her tank.
It close windows has nature light and aeration.
The defect is her tank with a western sun exposure in the afternoon.
Therefore the temps in the afternoon will more high.
I want to make sure if low down the temps for her health is necessary, I think I could affordable the chiller.

I will agree, that's fairly high. All I can say is that if you have the money to spend, go ahead and grab a chiller if there is no possible way to run the AC.

Maybe you can check to see what your neighbors are doing to keep their places cool. With such large windows, I can see why it would get so hot in there.

They use AC , so there are more hot air that they produced.

My turtle leave water lately more often than last month.
I don't know if the warm temps affect her to sleep on land.
http://www.redearslider.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16427
For example, she slept for 2 hours in tthe afternoon, just swum for 15 mins, she climbed shore to sleep again.
Does she tell me she is too warm?
