Hi there folks!

I've been using my above mentioned bulb and Sushi seems to love it. My question (which I'm sure has been previously answered...) is there a certain distance the bulb should be kept from the basking spot? Is there a risk of ''sunburn'' or damage to the eyes? The guy at the pet-store thought it was unnecessary to buy a basking bulb...but i've relied on this web as you guys are a pool of info and i've always been using one.

Follow the directions given on the box. If it's just a basking lamp with no UVB, the distance away will determine the basking area's temp. If it has UVB, too close will hurt their eyes.

If you don't have one already, you need a UVB bulb as well. The pet store guy was right that you don't need a special bulb for heat/UVA (a regular household bulb will do) but it certainly doesn't hurt anything. As far as distance goes you just want to make sure it's not too hot.

Joker -- I regards to "the guy at the pet store". Please take this to the bank! 97% do not know what they are talking about at these stores. If he has any books at all, turtle 101 will tell you that turtles need uvb and heat to bask. After you learn a little from this site and others you will find out how clueless most of them are. They know where the time clock, bathroom is and where to pick up their check on Friday.
