your better off with a canister. the ones that go in the water are internal filters. those and the hang on ones dont clean enough for a turtle tank. how big is your tank?

a canister is not a filter that the whole unit goes into the water. It has a big main tank and then two hoses. One is an in-take and one an out-flow.
Rena and Fluval are the favs around here. They are more expensive than other types but well worth it.
I have one of each only due to prices when buying. I like them both.
I think the rule of thumb is to have a filter that pushes 3 times the amount of water in your tank. i.e. 50 gallon tank needs a filter that pushes 150 gallons through.

instead of a new filter right now you might want to save up for a bigger tank. you are going to need one sooner than you think

10 gallons per inch of turtle is the rule of thumb. you might have to seperate(sp?) them eventually as well.
