Equipment Review and Discussion :: burned out my filter? xp2

The power went out today. My husband unplugged both filters when he got home because they weren't running.
I plugged in the aquaclear 50 and put some water in it and it started right up, but my XP2 is not running. I cleaned it out and let everything get cool again, but it's still not starting.
Is it possible it burned the motor up?
The power wasn't back on long enough to harm the aquaclear and I'm really suprised my XP2 didn't just start up again when the power came on...
Any advice?

Interesting situation... several things could have happened. We have an XP3 (just a little bit bigger). If the power went out the pump should still be filled with water when the power came back on, because the filter creates its own gravity siphon, so its not that you were running it without water. These filters are supposed to be ran with water going through them, and if they are ran for an extended period of time without being under load (water going through) there is a chance that the motor could over heat and burn out the elements. I really don't think it's that kind of problem. I'd probably give Rena a call and see what they say.

Also, if there was a big surge that went to the filter, it might have burnt the wiring going to the pump, essentially is a direct current motor and those things are supposed to be "brought up to speed", even though the time frame we're dealing with here is in the milliseconds.

I hope this sort of clarifies what might be going on with your filter.

"give Rena a call"? Uh oh... lol! I hope you get a better tech support guy than others here have had.

anyway, I don't know anything about the XP's but if they use an impeller driven pump, it may be that the impeller got stuck in a position that won't let it start up again. If there is an impeller in there somewhere and you can get to it, just give it a spin with your finger (while the power is off) to see if that loosens it, and then try running it again.

The whole motor is enclosed in the cap of these things, I wouldn't reccomend anyone taking it apart, especially if you raise enough cane that they'll send you a new one and you send them the old one back...don't want to void the warranty...if they even have those anymore

Does the motor make any noise? As mentioned above, it should stay primed during a power outage. However, you might want to try to re-prime it...
