Hey guys, Im having trouble finding a UVB light for my new RES (Piccolo) so I picked up some T-REX Liquid Solar Drops at the Pet Storeuntil I manage to get one... I wanted input from other RES users before giving them to the little guy. The bottle says:

"Pure vitamin D3 delivery system" Exclusively created from species specific sterols by intense UVB irradation. Diurnal Formula for daytime active reptiles." Directions: Use one drop per week, per animal regardless of size. Place drop on tip of lizards nose or on food that will be readily consumed."

Any ideas on whether this would be a suitable replacement until I get a light? I've been taking the lil guy out for walks in the sun too when I can..

How long do you have to wait for the light? If it's only a week or so he'll be fine, especially if you're taking him outside in the mean time.

I've never heard of this product, but anything that claims to make up for lack of uvb makes me wary.... Maybe someone else has seen/used it.

Most reputable pellets also have small amounts of vitamin D3. If you can, return it. Rep-Cal makes a powdered calcium/D3 supplement which is supposed to be very good, however I would be extremely cautious and reluctant in offering it.

Can you order a light on-line? As was mentioned, they can go for a bit without one (mine have). If it's warmish where you are, you could take him outside a few times a week on warmer days and let him get some UVB rays that way.

I'd skip the drops and work on getting the light sooner rather than later. I've read of people buying this product and asking the same question you have. The general consensus was not to use it (Vit D can be toxic if overdone.) Your turtle would get Vit D more efficiently through his shell (from basking under UVB rays), although some is obtained through the diet.

To me it seems like its an advertised "short cut" so they can make more money off of us. You can take him outside when its warm for the time being.

They're doing pretty good from what the kids tell me, they live with my ex til I move back to PA. But we have a California Desert Tortoise here that kind of holds me over til then.

Ha! I deleted my post because I started thinking that maybe I was dealing with someone else. Good to hear your turts are doing well. (California Desert Tortoise? Very interesting...)

I use Rep-cal mixed with Herptivite once a week for my box turtles with good results. They don't eat pellet food though, so I have to make up for it.

I use RepCal with vit D occasionally during the cooler/winter months when they can't get outside for sun. It is a good product.
