I'm trying to build a turtle dock for my res, I'm just wondering if is it safe to use a cyanoacrylate instant glue (the kind that bonds in seconds) on my aquarium?

Studies have shown that methyl-2-cyanoacrylate (SuperGlue and KrazyGlue) degrade fairly rapidly upon contact with living tissue. This leads to the release of formaldehyde and a toxic response. 2-octyl cyanoacrylate degrades much slower due to its longer organic backbone which slows the degradation of the adhesive enough to remain below the threshold of tissue toxicity. Due to these toxicity issues, 2-octyl-cyanoacrylate is used for sutures; commercially sold adhesives like Superglue and Krazy Glue are not appropriate.

In otherwords, unless you want your turtle for science class...

I would not suggest it.

Silicone or aquarium glue (usually the same thing), is probably your best bet. It can also be removed later with a sharp blade if needed. (although that may leave scratches.)

Thanks guys for your wonderful advice. I would not take any chances when it comes to my res, you're absolutely right, instead of using industrial glue I might as well go to a pet shop and buy an aquarium glue.

What kind of materials do you want to use? Aquarium silicon works better on some surfaces than others...
