I’m not trying to offend/dog on anyone if I do I’m sorry.
But....

I use to work at a stock tank manufacturing plant, & trust my when I say that stock tanks are not very clear when u first buy them. If anyone is planning on buying one, clean it very toughly before u put it to use.
The machines they use to make them aren’t exactly clean, same with some of the workers, and after they have been manufactured. (Depending on the company) they sit out in the sun collection dust, debris, & in some cases human pee. Sunlight is the worst enemy of galvanized steel.

Most stock tanks are made out of galvanized steel. The reason for this is that kind of steel is more resistance to water & rusting. Don’t get me wrong all metal rusts, but galvanized steel was made to hold water. They are made to water live stock that in turn we eat.

Off the subject a bit, once we had a special order for a "Rat Breeder" who breeds them by the thousands. Any way some time passes by, the buyer calls up back up & is complaining about the tanks leaking. It was not our tank that was leaking (I know I also sealed them at times) it was all the rat pee. It ate though the galvanized steel. I don’t know if stock tanks run the risk of pee rot, from our little aquatic pets, because we never received such an order.

I have pondered getting a stock tank myself for many reasons. mainly there durability, the fact that they can hold large body’s of water & take a hit with a base ball bat with no problem. Just a little dent is all. hehehe
The only reason I have not purchased one is because they remind my too much of my old job, I still see stock thanks in my sleep.

I don't use stock tanks but I'd like to make a comment..

First off you should clean any container you use for your turtles.. regardless of what it's made of. I also believe that most people that do use stock tanks are using the rubbermaid ones and not the galvanized steel ones

I use stock tanks, but not the galvanized steel ones; I don't like how they look, but that's just me. There are a number of mfgrs. of stock tanks (not just Rubbermaid) and from what I've seen, most are made of polypropelene (sp.) or a similar substance. The inventory of every stock tank I've bought has been stored outside, and I can't imagine anyone not seeing that they need a good cleaning before being used.

Heheh That’s true most people know better than to just start filling with water. I never considered getting a poly, that’s what we called the rubber stock tanks. They are sealed better that the metal ones, some come with drain plugs.

I use a metal stock tank and have been for 3 or 4 years now... and I love it. I put a spicket on the side near the bottom for easy drainage. I put it up on a stand made out of two by fours.

I purchased it from Tractor Supple. And YES I cleaned it very good when I got it. It cost about $100, and was the best investment ever... And within the next year I am going to get another one for my growing male turtle.

My husband and I have been talking a lot about buying one of the Rubbermaid stock tanks. My question is how often do you all clean your stock tanks? Is it just like using a fish tank or is there more involved?

It pretty much depends on factors that would affect cleaning a tank. The large one I have indoors has been cleaned (all water taken out and inside cleaned) once this year that I can remember (hope to get to do it within the next few weeks, though).

Aside from that, i dont see any reason why a metal stock tank wouldnt be good as long as you wash it well.

I clean my metal stock tank about 4 to 5 times a year, plus 5 gallons every week. Cleaning is so much easier then a smaller glass tank.... I clean my glass tanks twice as much.

I forgot to tell you all that I also net the tank out about once a week... when I remember to do it. Other then that it is not hard to take care of...
