Just picked up the Magnum 350 canister filter (getting my 100 gallon tank tomorrow) and wondered if anyone has used these and if so how well do they work. I will also be putting a small internal filter in the tank. I realize this may not be powerful enough for my tank but it was only $137 on sale and I really don't mind doing water changes.

Pen-o-75 Your are correct a 350 is not large enough. I would suggest that you get two or a much larger one. You need a five time per hour volume exchange to get good filtration. The 350 magnum is easy to clean. Lived in Nashua many years ago.

K so it turns out the tank is only 70-75 gallons!! This probably still isn't powerful enough especially since I can't get the intake to work!!! I also have a small internal in the tank so I'm hoping that will help with what little it can!!

pen-o The 350Marine Magnum is hard to get primed if you don't get the filter completely filled with water. After you get the media in fill it through the outlet and the inlet that is on the top. It should start right up.

OK so I just tried that and the intake still isn't working...I'm so frustrated...I don't understand what I'm doing wrong!! It's just not sucking up any water at all...

pen-o Something is stopping up the intake or outlet or there is something that is preventing the impeller from turning. If you have it full of water it should go.

I got it working...Finally!!! The o-ring was out of place in one spot which was screwing up the whole thing!!! Go figure...At least it wasn't a bad filter!!

Pen-o-p Yep! It the oring was on the suction side it was getting air and that will stop the pumping. Good Luck!

As I said in another post, I've been using this filter with very few problems. However it is much harder now to find parts for it, so just be aware of that.

I use my 350 for my 150 gal tank, which is a little over half full, and it seems to work just fine for the last several years.

I do plan to upgrade and hope to find something less time consuming to clean!
