if a filter has 300 gph what tank is it meant for

It depends on how heavily stocked your tank is. For a RES, I believe the recommendation is for a water turnover rate of at least 5X the volume of your tank per hour. So in that case 300GPH would be good for up to a 60G tank.

It also depends on the style and size of filter. An Aquaclear 70 hang-on-back filter has the same 300GPH flow rate of a Rena XP2 canister filter, but the XP2 is a much better filter and able to handle a larger tank. This is mostly due to its capacity to hold more filter media.

turt-cas The key with 5x water exchange it that it is the least amount you can get away with. If you can have a slight swirl in the water that would be great. The problem is that most folks new to turtles under size the filter pump. I have a 350 gph on one 55 gallon and a 300 gph on another 55 and I can tell the difference. Turtles just poo a lot and there is nothing you can do about that. m.

What filter are you considering in particular?

I have my FX5 doing about 400GPH (i've regulated the output) plus an under-tank refugium pumping about 250GPH, this is keeping my 120G of water nearly crystal clear.

i dont know but if i had two 300 gph filters for a 55 gallon tank would that be ok for my cage

It depends on the filter, but most likely that will be fine.

Poo-poo -- The FX5 is a 925 gph pump. You must have it squelched down considerably. The FX5 on a 400 gallon should be a great combination. I will be getting a 125 and a FX5 soon. I should have a little swirl in my water.

It's in the area of 650GPH with media in the canister. I have it toned down a little bit, because of my turtle's size, so there is a little swirl. That is doing all the mechanical filtration, and some of the biological. My refugium is doing a good amount of biological.

The 5x rule is an "at least" number. The more the better until you get to the blender stage. That number is the amount of water you have in a tank. Most turtle tanks have less than the size of the tank because we lower the water level to keep them in. My 55's gallon tanks have about 40 to 45 gallons and I work from that number.

Yes you did! If the filter pump puts out 300 gph, mathematically , it should do fine. I have a Fulval 405 which puts out 300 gph on a 55 gallon and it does ok.
