I was reading a good book on turtle husbandry (Keeping & Breeding Freshwater Turtles by Russ Gurley) and noticed a section about filters. They mentioned building your own canister filter. Theirs was made from a home depot bucket and a bunch of other things I couldn't recognize. But I was wondering if anyone had tried to make a homemade canister filter, if it works well, and any other experience someone might have with this particular topic. My husband and I are really considering getting Copernicus a bigger tank, maybe even a stock pond, but we really can't afford these expensive canister filters. Any thoughts/experience on homemade filters?

A lot of people with outside ponds build a filter called a skippy. You can google "skippy filter" and find out about it. I think it's basically a bio filter.

Those skippy filters look great. Now I want to build an outdoor pond, lol. I wonder if I could make a tiny one that might work for my inside aquarium....

You'd have to really scale it down. There's the mini Skippy, but even that would be too big for most aquariums. Depending on the size of your the tank, I'd go with a canister.
