i saw a good price on a 300 watt Marineland heater. would it be bad to use it in a 50 gallon tank?

6watts per gallon is a bit much. I used to run a 250watt in my 55, but now am running a 200watt and it does the job perfectly.

I think you could probably get away with running a 300watt though.

are you able to control the amount of heat output on a Marineland? would it be too warm for a 6" or 7" long RES? i'm quite sure i saw the person selling it for a REALLY cheap price on ebay. i'd rather be safe than sorry.

Yes you can control the heat output on the Marineland.

Its just the worry that the thermostat would crap out, and the heater wouldn't shut off so the water would keep heating up.

What do you guys think of inline heaters like these. We just got a 75 gallon tank for our two RES and need to invest in a heater. Thanks.

I've never used them, but on other forums, people who did liked them. Make sure they'll fit with the hose size of the filter.

I decided to go with the popular Stealth heater. The Rena one shown above actually is only an in tank heater; you hook your filters input to it and it acts as the down tube/strainer. So the rena one is not an "in line" that you can hide somewhere outside the tank. We opted out of the top one, the ETH 300 In-Line Heater for 16mm or 5/8 in. Tubing - 300W, because it's over twice the price of a Stealth heater.
