With canister filters, you get what you pay for. Buy a name brand like Fluval, Rena, or Eheim. You will spend more money, but you will get a reliable filter that you can easily find replacment parts for if something breaks.
My first canister filter was a Fluval 304, for a 55g tropical fish tank. When my boyfriend and I got a second 55g fish tank, he decided to get a cheaper filter. He got a Penn Plax canister filter, which was half the price of a Fluval. Yes, Penn Plax IS a name brand, but it was a cheap filter and it was a piece of junk. We had nothing but problems with it, and finally my boyfriend just went out and bought another Fluval to replace it.
