Can someone kindly explain to me what the circled part of this internal filter is for?

I see that thing on top of most internal filters. What the heck is it for?? Mine has one too and it comes with a short plastic tube. Someone please enlighten me!

Frankly I'm not sure. I think it's an airtube that needs to be above the water line.

It is for aeration. You put it above water, and it sucks in water and will then shoot out a stream of bubbles in with the outflowing water.

Maybe someone else can cast a little light on this one. However, I think the air is being used to pump the water around and aerate the water at the same time. It may be good for a fish tank but I don’t think it would pump enough water for a turtle tank. You need to exchange the water 5 plus time per hour. m.

No, the pump inside the filter is pushing water around. However as water passes through the outlet and past the hole the tubing is on, it creates a suction which draws in air from above the surface. Then, the air is introduced into the outflow and you have the same effectiveness filtration wise, but you have added aeration into the mix.

That's what I was looking for. I just could not for the life of me remember what it was called. Thanks Steve.
