Well, my XP3 is in a 40 gallon breeder, probably 30 gallons of actual water, and since it's rated for 350 gph, it should be good up to a 55 gallon tank or so. Honestly, you can kind of tell the current that is moving through the tank (Mikey is shedding, so you can see the skin flapping in the water), but he's adjusted like a pro. If you're sure you'll be upgrading in the future and your 55 gallon is mostly full, it probably won't be too bad, but if it's only half-full, it might be a little strong. Meanwhile, you don't want to have to buy a new filter later. It's a tough decision.
