yeah i was going to go with the 1/2 inch. but for now im gonna have to use the one i have. im going to pick up my turt on sunday in mass and bring her down here to NJ. then hopefulyl sometime next week i'll be able to get to a home depot and make one.

would the xp3 be alright to use in a 20gallon long tank? i'm upgrading to a 50 gal soon and i'm also wondering if the xp3 would be sufficient for one turtle less than a year old?

he's getting pretty big. he started out about the size of a half dollar and now he's approx. 2 1/2 in.

There's no flow control for the intake and that would be my primary concern. There is something called a pre-filter, which is a sponge that covers it, but I think you should wait abit until you can upgrade everything. And maybe the price will drop a bit

truthfully we were planning on getting it in parts. we planned to get the filter first and the tank later. would it be fine for a 50gal?

also, we currently have a whisper filter for 30-50gal tanks...it's not the best, so the tank is given regular cleanings and partial water changes often. it's basically our placeholder filter for now.

XP3 will be great for a 50 gallon. 2 things... if you wait a little longer you will know the gender of your turtle and can upgrade accordingly. You can also find a rubbermaid and other plastic containers in the 50 gallon size (though should only be filled about 1/2 way).

i'm going on an assumption, but you mean upgrade accordingly in terms of preparing in case my turtle is a female??? could you reference me to a page i could read, or could you explain the differences in your set up for a female vs a male other than the obvious fact that a female will be larger than a male? :p

Aside from the larger tank and related issues (more powerful filter + water heater), there isn't really anything else different.

Nesting issues will be the most difficult to deal with since female RES can be extremely picky as to where they lay their eggs.
