Equipment Review and Discussion :: "Zoo med Powersun" VS. "T-rex Flood Lamp"

Various accessories and equipment discussed here.

Its like night and day for Zilla.

When I used the powersun, 100 watt, from Zoo med (MVB). Zilla would only bask maybe once every two or three days..

When I decided to try out the Trex bulb I didnt realize the difference would be this extreme...

Zilla is basking for 4-5 hours a day now..I almost feel its truly designed for these animals watching Zilla's reaction.

Anyone who is undecided on what lighting to get..

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the 100 watt T REX Mercury Vapor Bulb!

I've been using those since day 1 :-)

I LOVE the T-Rex bulbs!!! I have been using them for almost a year and a half now, it is the only bulb my guys will bask under. Lol, yes I know they are picky.

Even before T-Rex started using newer technology in the making of their bulbs, keepers were generally preferring T-Rex bulbs over the Powersun for their relative longevity. It is considered to be a better bulb.

I had exactly the same experience with a powersun and a t rex. Spot was a pretty indifferent basker under a powersun, but he loves to bask under his t rex. Sometimes he basks 8 hours a day under the t rex. It made a big difference.

I see a few T-Rex bulbs on Petsmarts website

T-Rex Daylight bulb ($4.99-$5.79)
T-Rex Dayspot Light Bulbt ($7.39-$7.99)
T-Rex U.V. Active Heat Flood Bulb ($44.99)

Which one are you talking about.
I only see my turtle basking once a week (5-10min) and often in the morning 7am with no light on. Strange :?:

The third one on your list. As you can see, it costs quite a bit more than the other two, but that's because it's a mercury vapor bulb (gives off UVB rays, UVA rays and heat). The other two only are good for heat, which you could get from a regular incandescent house bulb. If you use one of these, your turtle will still need a UVB light.

What are you using for lighting? What is the temp of the basking area?

Is that the price that everyone is buying it for ($44.99)? Or is there a better deal somewhere else?

I bought a cheap clamp fixture from Home Depot ($5.99 or something) and using a Zoo Med Powersun 100watt (I think. It comes in a plastic case, not a box). I'm not sure what the temperature of the basking area is...haven't really checked. It feels nice and warm when I place my hand there.

How long do you guys keep your lights on? Also like what time of the day? I usually keep mine on from 6pm-12pm

Looks like petsmart doesn't carry it locally in their shops.
You have to order it from their website.

Just thought I'd note in case anyone else is looking for one.

Thanks for the link DavidY. I'll give them a shot.

Anyone wouldn't have a Zoomed power sun package? The missus threw it away and now I can't return it. Arggg. That's $17 bucks down the drain.
